This is the year that the air force detonates the nuclear weapon in the upper atmosphere. This causes the craft to crash on earth with the alien in it where it is then recovered by a naval task force. It is most likely taken to area 51 in Nevada where the craft and the alien are kept for 21 years until they are moved in the summer of 1979 where the plot of the movie begins.
